What is the International Day for Monuments and Sites?

The day is all about increasing the awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and preserving it for generations in the future. Ancient monuments and buildings are an asset all around the world. However, they need to be protected for years and years to come. Therefore, the day is a collective effort of communities around the globe.

On 18 April there are a number of different events that happen all over the world. This includes a wide range of activities, conferences, and visits to heritage sites and monuments.

The theme of Heritage Changes offers the opportunity to respond to questions regarding learning about traditional ways of knowing and knowledge systems in relation to climate action, and how to use a cultural heritage focus to support equitable protection of vulnerable communities through climate action, while responding to the UN Decade of Action.
